Something for Parents

SOMETHING FOR PARENTS

I have come across some interesting thoughts about math and would like to share them with you, since your child is preparing for this course.

Why is math important? Math is the critical first step to all the higher math and essential for anyone considering working in the sciences. Success in math correlates highly with success in higher education. Learning the abstract reasoning skills that math teaches helps children become better able to reason abstractly in general, in all subjects. The two college entrance exams, the SAT and the ACT, are loaded with math questions.

What if my child becomes frustrated with the subject and questions why it's important? Admit that math is hard. Realize that kids have figured out that they can buy great items without calculating 20% off, so there's no need to try to list the virtues of the subject. Do tell your child , "MATH TEACHES YOU TO THINK!" Doing math helps you practice thinking. It is like weightlifting for the brain. The struggles you experience this year serve to strengthen your mind.

How can I help? Have a good attitude about the subject. Emphasize its value. Stress the importance of nightly study. Be sure assignments are being completed. Stress neat papers. Help your child set priorities by scheduling activities to show that his/her schooling is of utmost importance. Call me or set up a conference right away if you are concerned about something in this class. The school number is 601-833-7549.

Let's work together this year to assure that your child has a solid foundation in higher mathematics!
